Overview

Pure-Flo® Supreme B81 by Oil-Dri is a surface-modified bleaching adsorbent developed for fats, edible oils and specialty oil-processing applications. It is designed to provide a practical balance of adsorption activity and filtration performance, particularly where moderate color and chlorophyll reduction are important.

Supreme B81 can adsorb selected metals and polar impurities while helping reduce color bodies, chlorophyll, soaps and phospholipid-related contaminants from compatible oils. Its filtration characteristics are designed to support long filtration cycles with reduced pressure buildup near the end of the cycle.

For broader grade-selection guidance, see our Bleaching Clays & Purification Adsorbents collection, Bleaching Earth for Edible Oil Refining , and Adsorbents for Oil Purification & Refining .

Where Pure-Flo® Supreme B81 Fits

  • Edible-oil refining: Bleaching and polishing of compatible vegetable oils, animal fats and specialty edible-oil streams.
  • Palm-oil processing: Physical refining applications where a balance of bleaching activity and filtration performance is important.
  • Corn & cottonseed oil: Reduction of color bodies and selected impurities during oil purification.
  • Tallow & animal fats: Clarification and color reduction in compatible processed fats.
  • Multi-oil processing: A surface-modified bleaching-earth option for facilities handling multiple feedstocks.
  • Specialty oil purification: Treatment of compatible oils requiring color reduction, selected impurity adsorption and reliable downstream filtration.

Supreme B81 belongs in the bleaching-earth branch, not the selective-adsorbent branch.

Compare Pure-Flo® B80 and Pure-Flo® Supreme 55 when evaluating alternative Oil-Dri bleaching-earth grades.

Selection note: B81 should not be selected from pH or apparent activity alone. Finished-oil quality, dosage, filtration rate, pressure buildup and oil retention all contribute to actual process economics.

Regulatory & Food-Processing Considerations

Oil-Dri positions the Pure-Flo® product family for fats and oils processing. Any application-specific regulatory or processing-aid status should be confirmed using the current manufacturer documentation for the exact supplied grade and market.

If your process requires a specific FDA, processing-aid, food-use, heavy-metals, elemental-impurity or other compliance statement, identify the requirement before ordering so Sorbents Direct can confirm the current documentation available from Oil-Dri.

Use & Process Guidance

Bleaching-earth dosage and operating conditions depend on the incoming oil, contaminant profile, required finished-oil specification, filtration equipment, temperature, vacuum, residence time and downstream process requirements.

Oil-Dri's published laboratory example for degummed sunflower oil used the following conditions:

Laboratory Condition Published Example
Oil quantity 200 grams
Vacuum 27–29 inches Hg
Bleaching temperature 220°F (104°C)
Residence time 30 minutes
Dosage rate 0.5%

These conditions are a manufacturer-published laboratory example, not a universal production recommendation. Bench or plant trials using the actual oil and equipment should establish the final dosage and operating conditions.

Filtration & Process Economics

Supreme B81 should be evaluated as part of the entire bleaching cycle rather than only by contaminant removal. In oil refining, filtration performance and retained product can materially affect total treatment cost.

Process Variable Why It Matters
Adsorbent dosage Affects treatment performance, media consumption and spent-cake volume
Color / chlorophyll target Determines the required level of bleaching performance
Filtration cycle length Influences throughput and equipment productivity
Pressure buildup Can limit filtration cycle duration and operating efficiency
Oil retention Product held in spent bleaching earth represents yield loss
Finished quality The selected grade should meet the process target without unnecessary over-treatment
