Oil Purification Is a Treatment Train, Not a Single Media Choice

Bleaching earth, selective silicates, attapulgite and conventional filter aids may all appear in an oil-treatment process, but they perform different primary functions. Selection should begin with the impurity and process step that needs improvement.

Separating these functions makes it easier to identify which media family should be evaluated first.
Color & Trace-Impurity Removal
Bleaching earths are used in refining processes to adsorb color bodies and selected trace impurities from oils and fats before downstream filtration.
Soaps, Metals & Phospholipids
Selective adsorbents can be used upstream to reduce impurities that interfere with refining, biodiesel processing or downstream catalyst and equipment performance.
Selected Polar Impurities
Thermally activated attapulgite can interact with selected impurities in compatible organic liquids through contact treatment or retained-media configurations depending on grade.
Filtration & Solids Separation
Filtration removes spent adsorbent and suspended material after treatment. Some media also combine sorptive treatment with a filtration or clarification role.

These media categories overlap, but they are not interchangeable.
Two products may both be mineral adsorbents while differing substantially in activation, chemistry, particle size, pore structure and intended process role. Manufacturer-designated application and process testing should guide final selection.
Bleaching Earth for Oils & Fats
Bleaching earth is used during oil refining to adsorb color bodies and selected trace impurities before the spent clay is removed by filtration. Grade selection should balance purification performance, dosage, filtration behavior and oil retention.
Pure-Flo® Supreme B81
Supreme B81 is a specialty bleaching earth for oil-refining applications requiring adsorptive treatment and efficient downstream filtration.
It is a practical starting grade for edible-oil and specialty-lipid purification where color and trace-impurity removal are important.
Pure-Flo® Supreme 55
Supreme 55 provides another bleaching-earth option for oil and fat purification where clay activity, dosage, finished-oil quality and filtration behavior must be balanced.
Final grade selection should be based on the actual feedstock and refining conditions rather than assuming one bleaching earth is universally superior.
Bleaching is broader than simply making oil lighter.
In refining, bleaching-earth treatment can target color bodies and selected trace contaminants that affect downstream processing and finished-oil quality. Performance should be evaluated using the actual feedstock and required specification.
Selective Adsorbents for Refining & Fuel Pretreatment
Some oil and fuel processes require removal of specific impurities before the main purification or conversion step. Selective adsorbents can be evaluated where soaps, metals, phospholipids or related feedstock contaminants are the primary concern.
Select 350
Select 350 is positioned as a selective adsorbent for oil and biodiesel refining applications where pretreatment of process impurities is required before downstream processing.
Evaluate against the specific feedstock, contaminant profile, dosage requirement and downstream process objective.
Select 450
Select 450 provides another selective-adsorbent option for purification and pretreatment processes involving oils, fats and renewable-fuel feedstocks.
Selection between grades should be based on current manufacturer data and representative process testing rather than product number alone.
Selective adsorbents are not simply alternative bleaching earths.
Pretreatment media may be chosen specifically to address soaps, metals, phospholipids or other impurities before later refining operations. Keeping that role separate from conventional bleaching improves both media selection and process troubleshooting.
Contact Treatment vs. Retained-Bed Attapulgite
Attapulgite can be used in compatible organic-liquid purification processes, but particle size and physical form change how the media fits the system. Fine granular grades can support contact filtration, while coarser grades can be retained in static beds or cartridges.
Microsorb®
Microsorb is a fine attapulgite sorbent and filtration media suited to contact-treatment processes where the mineral interacts with selected impurities in the liquid before downstream filtration.
This configuration allows the media dose, contact conditions and filtration step to be optimized around the actual process liquid and purification target.
Attasorb® 16/30 LVM
Attasorb 16/30 LVM is a coarse granular, thermally activated attapulgite suited to retained-media configurations such as static beds and cartridges.
Rather than being mixed into the entire process batch and filtered out afterward, the liquid can pass through a contained bed of granular sorptive media.
Particle Size Matters
Fine and coarse attapulgite grades should not be treated as equivalent simply because the mineral chemistry is related. Particle size affects contact method, retention and hydraulics.
Impurity Chemistry Matters
Thermally activated attapulgite can interact with selected water, surfactants and more-polar impurities in compatible organic liquids depending on the grade and process.
Separation Method Matters
Contact-treatment media must ultimately be separated from the liquid, while retained-bed media must remain physically contained while providing acceptable flow and pressure drop.
Clarification Media for Petroleum-Based Products
Petroleum and fuel treatment can involve a different impurity profile from edible-oil bleaching or renewable-fuel pretreatment. Media should therefore be selected around the actual petroleum product, contaminant and filtration configuration.
Ultra-Clear®
Ultra-Clear is an attapulgite-based purification and filtration media used in petroleum-related applications, including treatment of jet fuel and other petroleum-based products.
Available particle-size grades allow the media to be matched more closely to filtration configuration, required clarification and process handling.
Do Not Assume Petroleum = Edible Oil
Although the same broad mineral family can appear across multiple liquid-purification markets, petroleum products and edible oils can present different contaminants, quality requirements and operating conditions.
