A filter aid helps create and maintain a porous filtration structure through which liquid can pass while suspended solids are retained. The best grade is therefore not simply the finest material or the highest-flow product.

Start with the solids being removed, required clarity, liquid viscosity, target filtration rate, equipment configuration and cake behavior. Then select the filter-aid technology, permeability and grade that provide the most practical balance between retention and throughput.

In cake and depth-filtration systems, the filter aid becomes part of the filtration structure. Its particle shape and porosity help prevent process solids from forming an excessively dense, low-permeability layer.

A filter aid does not replace the filtration equipment.

These terms describe different ways process media can be used. Precoat and body feed are classic filter-aid techniques, while contact treatment can combine impurity interaction with downstream solids separation.

Establish the Filtration Layer

Filter aid is suspended in a compatible liquid and circulated through the equipment before normal filtration begins. The particles deposit on the septum to create a porous initial filtration layer.

Precoat can help protect the underlying filter medium, reduce blinding and establish more consistent cake formation.

BODY FEED

Maintain Cake Porosity

Filter aid is introduced into the process liquid during filtration. As process solids accumulate, the filter aid helps maintain a more permeable cake structure.

Body-feed dosage is application-specific and should be optimized around solids loading, filtration rate, clarity and cycle length.

CONTACT TREATMENT

Treat First, Separate Second

Some mineral media, including selected fine attapulgite grades, can be contacted directly with an organic liquid to interact with selected impurities before the spent media is removed by filtration.

This is different from using DE primarily to construct a permeable mechanical filtration cake.

“Porous mineral” does not automatically mean “filter aid.”

Products such as chromatography silica, precipitated silica, molecular sieves and activated alumina perform important industrial functions, but should not automatically be substituted for conventional precoat or body-feed filter aids unless the specific grade and process support that use.

Diatomaceous earth is one of the most established industrial filter-aid technologies. Its highly porous particle structure can form permeable cakes that retain suspended solids while allowing clarified liquid to pass.

The irregular, porous structure of processed diatomite helps create tortuous flow paths through the filter cake and supports depth filtration.

DE is available across a broad range of permeability grades so filtration can be balanced around required clarity, flow and solids characteristics.

Higher permeability is not automatically better.

Higher-permeability grades can support greater filtration rates, while lower-permeability grades may provide finer clarification. The objective is to achieve the required clarity at a useful and economical flow rate.

Do not select DE grade by permeability alone.

Product solids, viscosity, desired clarity, equipment, cycle time and filtration conditions all affect performance. Bench or pilot testing is recommended when qualifying a new grade or replacing an existing filter aid.

SORPTIVE FILTRATION MEDIA

Where Attapulgite Fits Into Liquid Filtration

Attapulgite can participate in filtration processes differently from conventional DE. Selected thermally activated grades can interact with impurities in organic liquids and then be retained or separated through the filtration system.

Contact Filtration

Fine granular attapulgite can be contacted with the process liquid so the mineral interacts with selected impurities before downstream filtration.

Retained Media

Coarser granular grades may be used in static-bed or cartridge configurations where the liquid passes through retained sorptive media.

Impurity Treatment

Depending on grade and process, thermally activated attapulgite can help address color, odor, water, surfactants and selected polar impurities in compatible organic liquids.

Attapulgite and DE solve different problems.

DE is primarily selected to build a porous mechanical filtration cake. Attapulgite may instead be selected for its sorptive treatment behavior with filtration providing the downstream separation step. Some processes can use both technologies for different functions.

Perlite & Cellulose Filter Aids

DE is not the only industrial filter-aid technology. Perlite and cellulose are also established options and may be selected because of density, process compatibility, cake behavior or equipment requirements.

PERLITE

Lightweight Mineral Filter Aid

Expanded and processed perlite can provide a porous filtration structure for precoat and body-feed applications. Its comparatively low bulk density can be advantageous where filter-aid performance is evaluated volumetrically rather than strictly by material weight.

CELLULOSE

Fibrous Filtration Media

Cellulose filter aids use fibrous particle structure rather than the mineral structure of DE or perlite. They may be used independently or alongside other filtration technologies depending on process compatibility and equipment.

Filter-Aid Selection Depends on the Equipment

Particle size and permeability cannot be evaluated independently from the filtration system. The filter aid must form and maintain a usable cake under the equipment's actual operating conditions.

Filter Press

Pressure-driven cake filtration using cloth or another filter medium. Precoat and body feed may be used depending on the process and solids.

Pressure Leaf Filter

Enclosed pressure filtration systems can use filter-aid precoats and body feed to establish and maintain a permeable cake.

Candle Filter

Cylindrical filter elements can support filter-aid cakes in enclosed liquid-filtration systems where fine clarification is required.

Rotary Vacuum Precoat

A deposited precoat forms the filtration layer on a rotating drum, supporting continuous or semi-continuous solids separation.
