Product Overview

Sphag-Sorb® is a lightweight, peat-moss-based organic granular absorbent designed for rapid cleanup of oil, fuel, diesel, gasoline, solvents, and other hydrocarbon spills. Its naturally oleophilic fibers attract hydrocarbons while limiting water uptake, making Sphag-Sorb well suited for industrial maintenance, transportation, environmental response, and outdoor spill-control applications.

Each 18 lb bag absorbs up to 17.6 gallons, providing high absorption capacity relative to its package weight and reducing the amount of material that must be handled during cleanup compared with many conventional mineral absorbents.

Key Advantages

  • High absorption capacity: Up to 17.6 gallons per 18 lb bag.
  • Oil-selective performance: Oleophilic peat fibers target oils, fuels, and hydrocarbons while limiting water uptake.
  • Lightweight organic media: Easier to transport, stage, apply, and collect than heavier mineral absorbents.
  • Versatile spill response: Suitable for maintenance areas, transportation facilities, industrial sites, paved surfaces, and many outdoor applications.
  • Granular application: Pour directly onto the spill, work the material into the liquid as needed, then collect the saturated absorbent for proper disposal.

Typical Applications

  • Maintenance & MRO: Oil, hydraulic fluid, lubricant, and fuel leaks around machinery and equipment
  • Transportation & fleet: Vehicle fluid spills, fueling areas, garages, terminals, and loading facilities
  • Environmental spill response: Hydrocarbon cleanup on pavement, soil, and other land-based surfaces
  • Industrial facilities: Routine oil and petroleum spill control around production and maintenance areas
  • Municipal & emergency response: Lightweight bulk absorbent for spill-response inventories and field cleanup

How to Use Sphag-Sorb®

  1. Stop and contain the source of the spill when it is safe to do so.
  2. Apply Sphag-Sorb over the affected area, beginning around the perimeter and working inward.
  3. Work the absorbent into the liquid as needed to maximize contact and hydrocarbon uptake.
  4. Collect the saturated material using appropriate tools and place it into a suitable waste container.
  5. Dispose of the used absorbent according to the contaminant involved and applicable local, state, and federal regulations.

Choosing Sphag-Sorb® vs. Mineral Absorbents

Sphag-Sorb is particularly useful when low package weight, high absorption capacity, and hydrocarbon selectivity are priorities. Traditional clay and mineral absorbents remain practical for general-purpose shop-floor cleanup, while Sphag-Sorb provides a lightweight alternative specifically suited to oil, fuel, and hydrocarbon spill response.

Questions & Answers

Q: How much liquid does one bag of Sphag-Sorb absorb?
A: An 18 lb bag provides up to approximately 17.6 gallons of absorption capacity.

Q: What liquids is Sphag-Sorb designed to absorb?
A: Sphag-Sorb is designed primarily for oils, fuels, diesel, gasoline, hydrocarbons, and compatible organic liquids. Its oleophilic peat fibers preferentially attract these liquids while limiting water uptake.

Q: What makes Sphag-Sorb different from clay absorbents?
A: Sphag-Sorb uses lightweight sphagnum peat moss rather than mineral or clay media. This provides high absorption capacity relative to package weight and makes the material easier to transport and handle during spill response.

Q: Can Sphag-Sorb be used outdoors?
A: Yes. It can be used for hydrocarbon cleanup on pavement, soil, transportation areas, and other outdoor surfaces. The spill source should be contained first, and site conditions such as rain or moving water should be considered during cleanup.

Q: How is used Sphag-Sorb disposed of?
A: Disposal requirements depend primarily on the liquid absorbed. Used material should be characterized and disposed of according to the contaminant and applicable local, state, and federal regulations.

Q: How is Sphag-Sorb packaged?
A: Sphag-Sorb is supplied in 18 lb bags. Sorbents Direct currently offers half pallets of 25 bags and full pallets of 50 bags.
