What Is Diatomaceous Earth Filter Aid?
Diatomaceous earth (DE) filter aid is a porous mineral filtration medium used to separate suspended solids from liquids. During filtration, DE forms a highly porous filter cake that captures particulate matter while allowing clarified liquid to pass through.

How Diatomaceous Earth Filtration Works
DE filtration is a mechanical separation process. Rather than chemically reacting with the liquid, the mineral creates a porous filtration layer through which the process liquid flows.
Prepare the Filter Aid
DE is dispersed into a compatible carrier liquid to create a slurry suitable for the filtration system.
Build the Filter Cake
Filter aid deposits onto the filter support, creating a porous cake that becomes the working filtration medium.
Capture Suspended Solids
Process liquid moves through the DE structure while suspended solids are retained within and on the filter cake.
Recover Clarified Liquid
Clarified liquid exits the filter while accumulated solids remain in the spent filter cake for removal at the end of the cycle.

How to Select a DE Filter Aid Grade
The goal is not simply to choose the finest available filter aid. Effective grade selection balances filtrate quality with sustainable flow, pressure rise and filtration-cycle performance.
Desired Filtrate Clarity
Determine the particle-removal or visual-clarity target. Tighter clarification may favor a finer filtration profile, provided the resulting flow rate remains practical.
Required Flow Rate
Higher-permeability grades allow liquid to move more freely through the cake and can be advantageous when throughput is a primary operating constraint.
Solids Loading
The quantity, size and character of suspended solids affect cake formation, pressure rise and the amount of body feed that may be required.
Filter Equipment
Plate-and-frame, pressure leaf, rotary vacuum and other systems have different operating characteristics. Filter-aid selection must fit the equipment and support media being used.
Cycle Length
A grade that produces excellent initial clarity but causes rapid pressure increase may not deliver the best overall process economics.
